- Strong and refined powertrains, brash styling, smoother coil-spring suspension.
- Some cheap interior materials, middling highway fuel economy, behind the towing and hauling curve.
- The best Tundra yet still doesn't have what it takes to be truly competitive with the domestic trucks.

VERDICT
Overview
The Toyota Tundra takes a different approach to the full-size truck segment than its American rivals. The old V-8 is out, replaced by a twin-turbo V-6 available in two states of tune, including a hybrid version that we cover separately. Toyota offers two different four-door cabs—medium and large, essentially—and everything is wrapped in chiseled sheetmetal. Instead of going for the biggest towing and hauling ratings, the Tundra is seemingly content with more moderate numbers that should still satisfy most light-duty truck buyers. A coil-spring rear suspension lends the Tundra a measure of civility, and a passel of off-road trims and packages provides good capability when you leave the pavement. The Tundra's latest cabin is much nicer than before, especially in the swanky upper trims, but it's still not up to the standards set by Ram and Ford.
Where This Vehicle Ranks
#9 in Best Full-Size Pickup Trucks
What's New for 2025?
We'll get the bad news out of the way first: Toyota has discontinued the Tundra's TRD Sport package, the rear-wheel-drive version of the TRD Off-Road. The sharp Solar Octane paint job isn't coming back for 2025, either. On the bright side, there's a new TRD Rally appearance package, and the SR5 gets standard eight-way power-adjustable front seats. The power tailgate is now available on the SR5 and standard on every trim above, massaging front seats join the Platinum and Capstone models, and the 1794 Edition gets its own unique embossed tailgate.
Pricing and Which One to Buy
The price of the 2025 Toyota Tundra is expected to start around $42,000 and go up to $65,000 depending on the trim and options.
The entry-level Tundra SR comes with the 348-hp twin-turbo V-6 and is available as an extended or crew cab (Double Cab and CrewMax, respectively, in ‘Yota vernacular). That’s all great, but it’s limited to manually adjusted seats, rolls on steel wheels, requires an upcharge for a basic class IV trailer hitch, and can’t be optioned with advanced driver aids beyond the standard Toyota Safety Sense 2.5 suite. Moving to the SR5 rights all these wrongs with either standard or available content. Horsepower goes up to 389 on this model, and torque jumps to 479 pound-feet. Adding the TRD Off-Road package brings a lifted suspension with Bilstein dampers, plus a host of touches designed to take the brunt of occasional off-road use.
Engine, Transmission, and Performance
The Tundra offers three powertrains, all of which are based on a twin-turbocharged 3.4-liter V-6. In the base SR model, the engine is tuned for 348 horsepower and 405 pound-feet of torque; otherwise, it makes 389 horses and 479 pound-feet. The third option is a 473-horsepower hybrid, which we review separately. All use a smooth-shifting 10-speed automatic transmission. Tundras equipped with four-wheel drive get a part-time setup; there's no full-time system like those offered in rival trucks. Like the Ram 1500, the Tundra utilizes a coil-spring rear suspension that results in a suppler ride in day-to-day operation.
0–60-MPH Times
In our testing, a Tundra Limited CrewMax 4x4 with the 389-hp twin-turbo V-6 delivered a 6.1-second sprint to 60 mph. For comparison, our long-term Tundra Hybrid CrewMax hit 60 mph in 5.5 seconds at the end of its 40,000-mile stay.

Towing and Payload Capacity
The Tundra can tow a maximum of 12,000 pounds. While sufficient, that rating makes it the least capable truck in the half-ton class. The Ford F-150 leads with a 14,000-pound rating, followed by the Chevrolet Silverado's 13,300 and the Ram 1500's 12,750. The Toyota's max payload is 1940 pounds, far behind Ford's 3250-pound rating.
Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG
In standard, nonhybrid form, the two-wheel-drive Tundra is EPA-rated for up to 20 mpg city and 24 mpg highway; four-wheel drive reduces those figures by 1 mpg each. However, the Tundra delivered only 19 mpg in our 75-mph highway route, which is part of our extensive testing regimen. That same truck averaged just 14 mpg overall while in our hands.
Interior, Comfort, and Cargo
Though the current Tundra is much better in terms of material quality and design than the previous generation, it fails to bring anything new or revolutionary to the full-size truck segment. The base interior is a bit drab and has some hard plastics here and there. Moving up the trim hierarchy brings the usual material and feature upgrades culminating with the top-of-the-line Capstone’s semi-aniline leather upholstery, American walnut interior trim, acoustically laminated side windows, and head-up display. The dashboard design is chunky yet purposeful-looking, and a wide center console houses the shift lever along with plenty of storage. Analog gauges and a small driver-information display are standard, but the top trim levels have a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster. The extended cab (a.k.a. Double Cab) is available with either a 6.5- or 8.1-foot bed while the longer crew cab (a.k.a. CrewMax) is offered with a 5.5- or 6.5-foot box. Opting for the shorter cab won’t affect front-row comfort but reduces rear-seat legroom from 41.6 inches in the crew cab to just 33.3.

Infotainment and Connectivity
SR and SR5 Tundras get an 8.0-inch infotainment touchscreen, but a 14-inch screen is available on the SR5 and is standard on the rest of the lineup. Featuring clear graphics, the bigger display dominates the center of the dash and is accompanied by a volume knob but lacks a tuning dial, and the controls on the steering wheel have limited functionality. Audio systems include a base six- (extended cab) or nine-speaker (crew cab) setup, as well as a 12-speaker JBL premium audio system that’s standard on the Limited and up. Wireless charging is standard on the Platinum and higher. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard, and a subscription-based Wi-Fi hotspot is available.
Safety and Driver-Assistance Features
All Tundras are stocked with the Toyota Safety Sense 2.5 suite of driver-assistance technology that includes automatic high-beams, lane-departure warning with steering assist, and more. Blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert and trailer detection are standard on Limiteds and up. For more information about the Tundra's crash-test results, visit the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) websites. Key safety features include:
- Standard forward-collision warning and automated emergency braking
- Standard lane-departure warning and lane-keeping assist
- Standard adaptive cruise control
Warranty and Maintenance Coverage
Toyota's limited and powertrain warranties align with what's offered on every other full-size pickup truck. However, Toyota's complimentary scheduled maintenance is unmatched.
- Limited warranty covers three years or 36,000 miles
- Powertrain warranty covers five years or 60,000 miles
- Complimentary maintenance is covered for two years or 25,000 miles
